The US Department of Treasury has lifted sanctions on co-founder of IBS Group Anatoly Karachinsky, as per the treasury’s website.
The statement does not state the reason why the sanctions have been removed. According to media outlet Agentstvo, this is the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine that the US Department of Treasury has lifted sanctions on a major Russian businessman.
Furthermore, independent director of the Sovkombank Joël Lautier and the Axioma yacht are no longer under sanctions. The yacht is said to be associated with Russian businessman Dmitry Pumpyansky.
The sanctions against Karachinsky were introduced in April 2022 due to the fact that he was a member of the supervisory board of the Otkritie bank. Six days later, he and several other members of the board resigned.
Furthermore, after ending up on the sanctions list, Karachinsky exited the IBS board of directors and sold his shares to the management.
In July 2022, Bloomberg reported that around 30 people filed a lawsuit against the European Union, demanding to be taken off the sanctions list, while about another 10 asked the EU directly to be removed.
It was previously revealed that Russian oligarch Mikhail Fridman convinced many Russian opposition politicians to sign a letter addressed to the European Commission, asking to lift sanctions on Alfa Group leaders.
In 2021, Karachinsky was among the top-200 richest businessmen of Russia, according to Forbes.
