Ukraine opens investigation following Gulagu.net interview with two ex-Wagner Group fighters

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an investigation into violation of laws and customs of war following an interview published by Gulagu.net where two former Wagner Group fighters confessed to multiple crimes, the agency announced.

The office stressed that a summons was issued for the Wagner Group chief and the head of one of its divisions for engaging in an aggressive war and encroaching on Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The chief in question is not specified.

Investigations have also been launched into actions of several Wagner Group fighters for murders and brutal mistreatment of civilians.

The Gulagu.net project earlier published confessions of two ex-convicts who went to Ukraine to fight for the Wagner Group. Here’s what they said:

Azamat Uldarov and Alexey Savichev were pardoned by Putin’s decree. They held senior positions in the mercenary group.

Savichev shared the following story: in January 2023 in Bakhmut he threw 30 grenades in a pit filled with killed and injured Russians and Ukrainians and then burned the bodies. The ex-convict also killed 10 teenagers and more than 20 unarmed Ukrainians on the command orders.

Uldarov said that he was ordered to kill children in Soledar and Bakhmut. He recalled a case when he murdered a young girl: “She was 5-6 years old, and I shot her, you know, to confirm the kill”.

Head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andriy Yermak has already commented on the video. “A confession alone is not enough. There must be punishment. A brutal and just one. And it will definitely come,” he wrote.
