Death toll of Sloviansk residential block attack rises to nine

The death toll of the attack on a residential building in Ukraine’s Sloviansk has risen to nine, Vadym Liakh, the local mayor, wrote on Facebook.

The rescuers retrieved the dead body of a woman overnight. As of 8.00 a.m. Kyiv time, five individuals remain under the rubble, their identities verified. Three more people are missing.

Senior Ukrainian official Andriy Yermak has said that Russian troops had shelled the area adjacent to a local school. At least seven explosions are said to have occurred.

The Donetsk region governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Friday that eight people had been killed and 21 injured in the attack, including a 2-year-old child.

The Russian missiles hit three five-storey buildings, two of which then caught fire, Yermak wrote. Several neighbouring buildings were also damaged. Kyrylenko reported that the school had also been hit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the shelling:

“Sloviansk. The invaders brutally shelled the city. Residential buildings were hit. Unfortunately, wounded and dead are reported. The evil state once again demonstrates its essence. Just killing people in broad daylight. Ruining, destroying all life,” he wrote.

Russia has yet to comment on the incident.
