NATO General Secretary: Finland to join the Alliance on Tuesday

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO General Secretary, has announced that Finland will officially join NATO tomorrow, Tuesday 4 April, a newsperson for Novaya Gazeta Europe reports.

Stoltenberg announced this at a press conference that preceded the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member countries scheduled for 4 and 5 April in Brussels.

“It’s a historical week. Tomorrow we will welcome Finland as the 31st member of NATO, making Finland safer and our alliance stronger. We will raise the Finnish flag here at the NATO headquarters,” Stoltenberg said.

He also added that the Finnish President Sauli Niinistö would arrive in the NATO HQ on Tuesday to take part in the ceremony.

Turkey’s president Recep Erdoğan approved the Turkish parliament’s decision on ratifying Finland’s NATO membership bid in late March. Turkey was the last member of the alliance to do so.

Sauli Niinistö, the President of Finland, signed laws on Finland joining NATO on 23 March. “We have seen sincere and decisive steps from Helsinki. We have decided to start the process of ratifying Finland’s application to join NATO in Parliament,” Turkish president Recep Erdoğan said.
