A Moscow court has ruled that the Anglo-American School of Moscow is guilty of violating Russian educational standards and suspended its operation by 90 days, RBC was told by the court.
The ruling came following a prosecutor inspection on 28 February. The law enforcement agencies concluded that the school does not offer extracurricular education based on the International Baccalaureate and Common Core State Standards programmes.
Moreover, the prosecutor’s office stressed that teachers that could not provide documents to prove their professional education and relevant qualifications were allowed to teach in the school.
The Anglo-American School of Moscow has approximately 1,200 children aged between 4 and 18. It was established by the US, UK, and Canadian embassies in 1949, children of diplomats from these countries particularly attend lessons there. According to the school website, education fees vary from $21,320 to $33,820 per year depending on the grade.
In January 2022, the school was searched as part of the investigation into the case of Marc Fogel, former US embassy staffer and Anglo-American School of Moscow teacher. In the summer, Fogel was sentenced to 14 years behind bars in Russia for smuggling drugs.
According to the investigation team, he flew from New York to Moscow in summer 2021 with a suitcase where “marijuana and hash oil” were discovered.
