Explosion reported in Russian town of Kireyevsk, at least three people wounded

An explosion has been reported in the town of Kireyevsk, Russia’s Tula region, two people have received shrapnel wounds, Russia’s state news agency TASS reports, citing the Unified Dispatch Service.

The town is located 35 km away from the regional capital Tula. As of now, the source of the explosion is unknown.

“The explosion occurred at 3:19 PM [local time, GMT+3], two people were injured — the first born in 2002 and the second in 2006. They’ve got shrapnel wounds, the ambulance has arrived. There’s a crater. The explosion took place within the city limits,” a representative of the dispatch service told TASS.

Update 5:26 PM

The number of people injured in the explosion has increased to three, TASS reports.

According to the state news agency, which cites law enforcement, the cause of the explosion was a drone.

UPDATE 11:20 pm

Russia’s Defence Ministry claims that Ukraine is responsible for the explosion of a Strizh (Tu-141) strike drone in the Tula region.

According to the Russian ministry, “the Pole-21 electronic warfare system affected the Ukrainian attack drone, so its navigation system was disabled”. The drone crashed in the area near Kireyevsk.
