Russia’s Investigative Committee initiates criminal procedure over anthrax outbreak in Chuvashia

The Investigative Committee in Russia’s Chuvashia has initiated a criminal procedure on account of violation of veterinary regulations after several locals became infected with anthrax, the agency’s website says.

The investigators’ theory is that a man from the locality of Staroye Aktashevo killed a bull infected with anthrax for meat. This resulted in the man’s neighbour, wife, and one more local also becoming infected.

The suspect was not following veterinary interventions necessary to prevent diseases among his livestock, did not vaccinate them and did not have them checked at a vet’s, the agency says in a statement.

Quarantine was introduced in Staroye Aktashevo on 16 March. Emergency mode was declared in the area the following day.

It was revealed yesterday that a man in the Moscow region was found out to be allegedly infected with anthrax. Reportedly he had arrived from Chuvashia. The man was admitted to hospital.
