Saint Petersburg: man who opened fire on OMON officer detained

Employees of the Saint Petersburg Interior Ministry Directorate have detained a man, born in 1972, who had allegedly fired at an officer of the Special Purpose Mobile Unit (OMON) earlier in the day, press service of the Investigative Committee reports.

“According to the investigation, in the morning of 24 February 2023, in the centre of Saint Petersburg <…> a man fired at an OMON officer,” the statement reads.

The injured officer was hospitalised. The Saint Petersburg branch of the Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case on an attempt on the life of an official of a law enforcement agency.

Local media outlet Fontanka claims that the attacker used a sawed-off shotgun, injuring the officer in the stomach. The press service of the North-West District Troops of Russia’s National Guard told the media outlet that the suspect had opened fire when the officer had attempted to detain him.

Furthermore, two Molotov cocktails and a speaker were found on the attacker, Fontanka reports.
