Two Russians fleeing draft allowed to enter South Korea after living in Seoul airport for several months

A court in South Korea has allowed two Russian nationals fleeing draft to apply for asylum, The Moscow Times reports, referring to AFP.

The young men in question have been living at the Incheon airport in Seoul since October as they were not allowed to leave the transit zone and enter the country. They have now been allowed to live in South Korea and wait for their asylum application to be considered, which may take years.

There were five Russians in total initially, and the court has rejected applications of three of them. They may appeal the decision.

The Korea Times reported about five Russian nationals stuck in the airport earlier. All of them reached South Korea by different means hoping to receive political asylum.

The Korea Times notes that South Korea granted asylum to only 1.3% of all applicants in 2021, the second lowest figure among G20 countries.
