The Observer: Ukrainian sabotage groups active in Russian rear areas

Ukrainian special sabotage groups are operating in Russia-occupied Ukrainian territories and deep rear areas of Russia. The groups claim to have been involved in assassinations of three Russians, The Observer reports.

A journalist for The Observer spoke to one of these cells. According to fighters of the Bratstvo battalion, which acts independently from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, “It is very easy for us to cross the Russian border” and organise assassinations of senior Russian Interior Ministry officials. However, it is not clear whether officials were ultimately murdered.

“We showed we can enter the territory of Russia and show the Russians that Ukrainians can act. After the Russians find out that saboteurs are working on their territory, they need to move a lot of soldiers to find these saboteurs. It is very demoralising to the enemy,” a battalion member told The Observer.

In the interview, the group also said that they managed to eliminate three Russian citizens in Russia. The fighters said that Ukrainian officials will deny any information about them.

These groups’ operations range from smuggling explosives and kidnapping senior Kremlin officials to destruction of key military infrastructure and downing enemy planes in Russia, The Observer writes.
