Russian couple gets over two years in prison for setting car marked with letter Z on fire

Oleg Denisov and Irina Kuznetsova, a Russian married couple, have been sentenced to more than two years behind bars for setting fire to a car with the letter Z written on it in Rostov-on-Don, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.

The couple was charged with deliberate destruction of property.

“The court that involved a state prosecutor determined that the defendants in July 2022 set fire to a car marked with the Z symbol. The criminal offence fully destroyed the car. The damage caused to the owner exceeded 700,000 rubles (€9,150),” the statement reads.

Arson and fires have become commonplace in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. According to Mediazona, there have been 43 cases of draft office arson since mobilisation was announced in Russia and 78 cases since the war broke out.
