Sochi court fines local woman over WhatsApp status: ‘Glory to Ukraine’ in Korean

A court in Sochi has fined a woman for posting a status on WhatsApp which read ‘Glory to Ukraine’ in the Korean language, the court’s press relations department reports.

The Sochi woman was found guilty of “publicly demonstrating nazi symbols” and fined 2,000 rubles (€26).

“She posted a slogan in Korean, which, translated into Russian, is equal to a salute used by extremist organisations banned in Russia by decision of the Supreme Court,” the statement says.

The accused woman pleaded guilty and requested minimum punishment.

Viktoria, who asked to keep her last name undisclosed, has told Kavkaz.Realii that she was called in to work on 1 February where police officers were awaiting her as she arrived. She says she was then taken to a police station where she was told her WhatsApp status was considered “an extremist slogan”.

Viktoria also noted that she was unaware of who reported her to the police.
