Russia orders Latvian ambassador to leave in two weeks’ time

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has ordered that the Latvian ambassador must leave the country in two weeks' time, the ministry’s website reads.

“Latvia’s charge d’affaires Dace Rutka was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on 27 January in connection with the decision made by the Latvian leadership to downgrade the Russo-Latvian diplomatic relationship. She was told that as long as this critical decision has been made, we are not going to wait until the date stated by Riga. Māris Riekstiņš, the Latvian ambassador to Russia, has been ordered to leave the Russian federation within two weeks’ time,” the statement reads.

Russia expelled the ambassador of Estonia earlier this week when the two countries downgraded their diplomatic relationship. Latvia announced it would also downgrade its diplomatic relationship with Russia in solidarity with Estonia starting 24 February.
