Chairman of Russia’s lower house Volodin proposes to raise taxes for citizens who left the country

Chairman of Russia’s State Duma [the lower house of Parliament] Vyacheslav Volodin has proposed to raise taxes for Russian citizens who had left the country, as per his official Telegram channel.

According to Volodin, it is incorrect to “give preferences and benefits to those who left the country in order to get them to come back”.

“It’s quite clear why they fled. Those who realised they had committed a mistake have already returned. The rest of them have to understand: the vast majority of the public does not support their decision and thinks that they betrayed their country, relatives, and loved ones. But as of today, the people who left still not only work for Russian companies remotely but also enjoy all the benefits that [remote work] allows them to have in accordance with our country’s laws,” the chairman writes.

The politician notes that he is working on appropriate amendments to the legislature.

Senator Andrey Klishas previously said that Russian authorities could devise measures that would make “residing abroad less comfortable” for citizens who had left the country after the mobilisation announcement.

According to Klishas, limitations on working from abroad should be introduced “for [employees] of delicate fields” of the economy, for example, for those who work in the field of transport security and public sector.
