Explosion reported at Russia’s Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod pipeline carrying gas to Europe

An explosion has been reported on a section of Russia’s Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod gas pipeline in the region of Chuvashia, a fire ensued, RBC reports, citing the regional governor’s office.

“The organisation in charge of the pipeline maintenance was working on it before the fire… The details are being investigated,” RBC was told. “The head of Chuvashia has been informed [about the situation], he is keeping a close eye on the situation.”

The regional authorities say that the fire is still blazing at the site. As of 1:50 local time this section of the pipeline was closed off.

UPDATE

RIA Novosti reports citing a local official that 3 people died and 1 was injured in the pipeline explosion.

On 18 December, a fire occurred at an oil and gas condensate field in Russia’s Irkutsk region, it was later put out. One person was injured.
