Kyiv attacked by kamikaze drones, emergency power outages expected in the city

Explosions were reported in two districts of the Ukrainian capital in the morning, Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko says.

“All the [emergency] crews are on site. More information — later,” he wrote on his Telegram channel. According to Klitschko, no one was hurt in the attack. Emergency power outages are expected in the city.

The Kyiv city military administration said that kamikaze drones Shahed had been shot down in the city; these drones are acquired by Russia from Iran.

An air raid warning is still on in Kyiv, the air defence system is activated. Explosions have also been heard in the central part of the city; most likely, that was also the work of the air defence system, the administration added. Around 10 explosions in total have been reported, according to the administration.

Later on, the administration clarified that the Ukrainians air defence system had destroyed 15 out of 20 Iranian drones Shahed. “Unfortunately, a critical infrastructure facility has been hit. Emergency crews are dealing with the aftermath. Information about victims and damage to come,” head of the administration Serhiy Popko reported.

The previous attack on Kyiv as well as other Ukrainian cities was conducted on Friday, 16 December. After the attack, there were power outages in the capital, and the air defence system was activated in the region. An air raid warning was imposed over the territory of the entire country. The Kharkiv and Dnipro regions were left without power; four people were killed as a result of the attack in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro region.
