Russian prosecutor general: corrupt officials stole €570 million in 9 months of 2022

Corruption investigations revealed that 37.6 billion rubles (€570 million) were stolen in Russia in the first nine months of 2022, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said in an interview with TASS.

“In these 9 months alone, the identified damages caused by corruption-related crimes reached 37.6 billion rubles. At the same time, assets worth more than 62.2 billion rubles (€945 million — translator’s note) were arrested and seized, while damages amounting to 3.5 billion rubles (€53 million — translator’s note) were voluntarily repaid,” Krasnov noted.

His calculations also show that corrupt officials in 2021 stole 63.9 billion rubles (€961 million — translator’s note). Krasnov also noted that the average bribe in Russia stands at more than 500,000 rubles (€7,500 — translator’s note). This year, bribes have already approached 2 billion rubles (€30.3 million — translator’s note).

“We are also concerned by the clearly visible number of ‘rogue cops’ who were found guilty of corruption, 70% of them worked for the Interior Ministry. We crack down on any cases of corruption among our ranks, 11 prosecutor office employees have been taken to court for these crimes in 2022,” Krasnov said.
