Moscow government plans to spend over €374m on video surveillance

The Moscow government plans to spend over 23.3bn rubles (over €374m) on video surveillance, Kommersant newspaper reports. The Moscow department for competitive policies published six tenders on handing over the information on video surveillance targets to a united data processing centre.

The new purchases are made due to the fact that the contracts signed over four years ago have expired, the Moscow Department of Information Technology stated. The new contracts will be signed for the period of five years.

“These contracts will ensure video surveillance near apartment buildings, in backyards and in public spaces,” the department stated.

According to the Moscow mayor’s office, there are 213,000 surveillance cameras in Moscow. The Moscow police have access to these cameras.

A year ago, it was reported that the Moscow government planned to allocate 9.8bn rubles (€160.1m) for support and development of the city video surveillance system in 2022. In particular, the local government uses video surveillance cameras to hand over draft notices to Moscow residents, as well as to detain opposition and anti-war activists.
