Rishi Sunak appointed UK prime minister

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has become the 57th prime minister of the United Kingdom, BBC reports.

King Charles III has invited Sunak to form a government. Sunak is the third prime minister in the country this year, the first ever person of colour to hold this position, and the youngest person to lead the country in two centuries.

After a meeting with the king at Buckingham Palace, the new prime minister made his way to Downing Street to form a new Cabinet.

Yesterday, 24 October, Sunak remained the only candidate for Tory leadership. His only rival for the position Penny Mordaunt withdrew her candidacy. She expressed her support for Sunak in a statement, saying: “We all owe it to the country, to each other and to Rishi to unite and work together for the good of the nation. There is much work to be done”.

Previously, the former PM Boris Johnson announced that he would not be submitting his candidacy for the post of the leader of the Conservative party.

Sunak came second before Liz Truss during the previous Tory leadership contest. On 20 October, she resigned six weeks after becoming prime minister.
