Russia requests to convene UN Security Council session over Nord Stream pipeline leaks

Russia has asked to convene an official session of the UN Security Council over the “acts of sabotage” on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, TASS reports, citing Dmitry Polyansky, the deputy Russian envoy to the UN.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also voiced Russia’s intent to convene a UN Security Council session.

Bloomberg points out that the rupture of the Nord Stream gas pipelines may lead to one of the largest gas leaks in history.

On 26 September, gas leaks were reported on two strings of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in the exclusive economic zone of Denmark to the northeast of the island of Bornholm. Later, another leak was documented on one of the strings of Nord Stream 2 in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone to the southeast of Bornholm. Swedish and Danish seismic stations documented two major underwater explosions in the area of the gas leaks, SVT TV channel reported.

Nord Stream AG operator has stated that the situation is “unprecedented” and that three strings of the pipeline were damaged. When asked whether the incident could be a result of sabotage, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We can’t rule out any option.”

Yesterday, German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel wrote that the pipelines might have been damaged by divers or attacked from a submarine.
