School shooting in Russia’s Izhevsk: unknown man kills at least 13, injures 23

A shooting occurred in school 88 in the Russian city of Izhevsk, confirms Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Media report that an unknown man dressed in black stormed into the school during lessons, shot the security guard, and then went into a classroom and opened fire on children.

At least 13 people were killed, among them nine children, reports Udmurtia’s head Alexander Brechalov. It was also previously reported by Russia’s Investigative Committee that there were two teachers and two security guards among the victims. A criminal case on killing two and more persons was initiated, as well as a criminal case on illegal possession of weapons.

According to Bechalov, there is currently information about 23 injured, among them 20 children. The attacker shot himself, the policemen found his body.

The Investigative Committee claims that the shooter was wearing a shirt with Nazi symbols on it and a balaclava. The agency’s official Telegram channel posted a video, which allegedly shows the shot attacker with a red swastika on his chest.

According to the Investigative Committee, the attacker was Artem Kazantsev, 34, Izhevsk native and graduate of the school he had conducted the shooting in.

Brechalov announced a mourning period for the victims in the region until 29 September.
