Russian Primorsky region MP sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment over charges of ‘corrupting a minor’

Russian city of Vladivostok’s district court has sentenced a Primorsky region MP for the Communist Party, Artem Samsonov, to 13 years of strict regime penal colony over charges of corrupting a minor, reports Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti, citing the local Investigative Committee.

Samsonov was found guilty of committing “other sexual acts” towards a minor.

The prosecutor previously asked for 15 years of imprisonment for the MP.

The investigation claims that the legislator went on vacation to a recreation centre in Vladivostok in July 2018 where he showed a dildo to the 11-years-old son of his acquaintance as well as “made him aware of its uses”. In November 2021, Samsonov was sent to a pre-trial detention centre; on 2 December 2021, the Investigative Committee filed charges against him.

The MP said that he had an alibi, however, the court did not take that into account.

The Russian Communist Party connects the persecution of Samsonov with the party’s success during the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the region in 2021 as well as unwillingness to let Samsonov run for a spot in the City Duma of Vladivostok in the 2022 elections.
