Queen Elizabeth II dies at the age of 96

The Queen of the United Kingdom Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96, reports the BBC.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,“ Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Buckingham Palace later shared a statement on behalf of His Majesty The King:

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

The new King will be known as Charles III. “Today, the crown passes, as it has done for more than 1,000 years to our new monarch, our new head of state, His Majesty King Charles III,” the UK Prime Minister Liz Truss announced during a press conference.

“Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral,” was the statement released earlier today, 8 September, by Buckingham Palace.

On 7 September, the Queen postponed the Privy Council meeting on recommendation of her doctors.

Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 in the family of the future King George VI and lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

She ascended to the throne on 6 February 1952 at the age of 25.

Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in the history of the British monarchy; she was also the oldest reigning monarch in the world at the time of her death. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II was served by 15 Prime Ministers.

In 2021, the Queen buried her husband, Prince Philip. He died at the age of 99, 73 of which he spent with his wife. They had four children.

The Queen’s successor is her oldest son Charles, Prince of Wales.
