Katerina Gordeeva receives the Anna Politkovskaya award Kamerton

The Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya Kamerton award ceremony took place today in Moscow. This year, journalist, writer, and author of the Skazhi Gordeevoy (Tell Gordeeva) YouTube channel, Katerina Gordeeva, was the recipient of the award.

She was given the prize by journalist Svetlana Sorokina and actor Artur Smolyaninov.

“The decision to become a journalist has been the stupidest one in all of our lives. It’s a completely broken life, a completely broken professional fate. But there’s one thing I truly believe in: even when someone breaks your life or your fate, you shouldn’t let your conscience break. I am proud to know so many people whose conscience hasn’t been broken,” she said after receiving the award.

The Skazhi Gordeevoy channel has become one of the biggest phenomena of Russian YouTube since the start of the war. Since 24 February, the journalist’s YouTube feed has featured interviews with mothers of the participants in the military action, Ukrainians that had been witnesses to this action, Russian journalists, writers, scientists, actors, and statesmen.

This is the tenth Kamerton prize. Several times in the past, the award ceremony took place on Anna Politkovskaya’s birthday, 30 August.

“This award is granted for outstanding achievements in the field of protection of human rights, for courage and consistency in upholding the principles of freedom of expression, for honesty, virtue, civil liability, and human compassion,” notes Novaya Gazeta.

Last year, the prize was awarded to chief executive officer of the Rain media holding Natalia Sindeeva and photographer Dmitry Markov as well as to musician Nikolay Solonovich and chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi conducted by Vladimir Spivakov.
