A Moscow district court has allowed the transfer of rector of the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Science (known as Shaninka) Sergey Zuev from a pre-trial detention centre, he was instead put under house arrest, reports Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, citing their correspondent.
The investigation asked that Zuev be put under house arrest. He will be kept under house arrest until 11 October 2022.
During a court hearing today, 3 August, the investigator said that the scientist had admitted his guilt and paid damages. According to the investigator, Zuev had testified against the other accomplices, which is why he asked to be put under house arrest. The prosecutor supported the petition.
Zuev was arrested last autumn. On 22 June 2022, the Moscow City Court ruled to keep Zuev at a pre-trial detention facility despite the ruling of the cassation court that had deemed the 67-year-old professor’s arrest unlawful and sent the court ruling for further examination.
The criminal case was opened over suspected fraud and embezzlement of the Foundation for New Forms of Educational Development funds allocated for the Teacher of the Future federal project.
Aside from Zuev, former Russian Deputy Minister of Education Marina Rakova, Shaninka executive director Kristina Kryuchkova, and Rector of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) Vladimir Mau and its Vice Rector Ivan Fedotov are all persons of interest in the case. Today it was reported that Mau had been released from house arrest and is now on recognisance.
