Belarus concludes investigation into case of ‘railway partisans'. They are facing the death penalty

The Belarusian Investigative Committee has concluded the investigation into the first case of “railway partisans”. The suspects are accused of railway terrorism, the committee’s press service reports.

According to the investigation, in February of this year, the 29-year-old resident of Svietlahorsk voluntarily joined the BYPOL/Mobilisation plan “Peramoga” extremist formations, whose leaders instructed him to disable railway infrastructure on the territory of the Gomel region,” the Belarusian Investigative Committee reports.

There are two more suspects in the case, both are men. They are accused of setting fire to a relay signal box that ensures safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles through the rail road. The men were allegedly received payment for this.

“The young men walked to the arson site. After they completed their criminal plan, they returned to their accomplice. After that, the extremists left and tried to do everything they could to cover up the evidence of the crime,” the law enforcement added.

The damage comes up to about 55,000 Belarusian rubles (over $16,000). The men face the death penalty under the charges pressed against them.

Nasha Niva news outlet reports that the names of the suspects in the first case are Denis Dikun, Dzmitry Ravich and Aleh Malchanau. Dzmitry Dikun, the brother of one of the suspects, said that Denis wanted “to help Ukraine in any way he could.”

Several cases of railway sabotage have been reported in Belarus following the start of the war in Ukraine, when the BYPOL initiative called on Belarusians to block the country’s railroads transporting Russian military equipment. Several dozen people were detained in relation to these cases.
