Yeltsin’s associate Gennady Burbulis dies in Baku at 76

Gennady Burbulis, Boris Yeltsin’s close associate and Russia’s First Deputy PM died in Baku today, Interfax cites Andrey Markov, Gennady’s chairman.

“He wasn’t ill, he was in great shape and took part in the IX Global Forum in Baku just recently,” Markov says.

Burbulis acted as Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister between 1991 and 1992 and Russia’s Secretary of State when Boris Yeltsin was the country’s president, he also was one of the drafters and signers of the Belavezha Accords on behalf of Russia. Later, Burbulis acted as a member of both the lower and the upper houses of the Russian parliament between 1993 and 2007.
