Macron: France, Germany, Italy and Romania vow prompt EU candidate status to Ukraine

France, Germany, Italy and Romania are in favour of Ukraine getting a EU candidate status as soon as possible, announced French President Emmanuel Macron during a press conference in Kyiv after a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The four of us support the fastest possible granting of a European Union candidate status to Ukraine. This status will be accompanied by a road map,” he said.

The president stressed that the European Union won’t demand Ukraine give up any territory for the sake of ending the war. The French leader also announced additional delivery of six 155mm Caesar self-propelled howitzers.

Macron arrived in Ukraine today. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis are also on a visit to Kyiv today. Before meeting with Zelensky the politicians visited Irpin—a city nearby Kyiv that had suffered massive damages due to the actions of Russian troops.

“We all saw the devastation of the Hero City. This is where Ukrainians stopped the Russian army heading towards Kyiv. <...> We unequivocally support Ukraine,” declared the French president.

“We will rebuild everything. Russians destroyed kindergartens, children’s playgrounds. Everything will be rebuilt,” promised Mario Draghi after the visit to Irpin.
