Russian Higher Education Ministry recommends unis to scrap Erasmus+ cooperation

Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education has recommended Russian universities to abandon cooperation within the EU’s Erasmus+ student exchange programme, TASS cites the ministry’s PR office.

The Council of the European Union banned providing financial and non-financial support to Russian state-controlled educational institutions on 8 April, says the Russian ministry.

The joint Russian-European Erasmus+ programme is sponsored by the EU. Over 13 thousand Russian students have taken part in the programme since its inception in 2014, TASS says.

The EU has sponsored the original Erasmus Programme, aimed at developing educational cooperation between countries, for over 30 years. Erasmus provided international exchange opportunities to Russian students and organised other educational projects.

The website of the Russian branch has no information regarding the termination of cooperation. It does, however, still mention the actual 2021-2027 programme plan.

Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced its plan to withdraw from the Bologna Process, which Russia joined in 2003, and start developing its own system of higher education on 24 May.
