New ‘extremism’ charges against Alexey Navalny, faces 15 more years in prison

Alexey Navalny, the leader of Russia’s opposition, says he has been charged with a new case for “creating an extremist organisation”. Navalny is facing up to 15 more years to his sentence, according to his Instagram.

Navalny says he is accused of calling out for mass protests and “creating an extremist group aimed at inciting hatred towards officials and oligarchs."

“You see, I am going to be provided with 15 more years in a trouble-free bunker, safe and sound, sheltered from the hardships of the so-called “freedom” where streets are filled up with ordinary people instead of prison wardens,” Navalny was sarcastic about a potential addition to his prison term.

The Moscow City Court rejected Navalny’s appeal against a nine-year prison sentence he is serving for fraud and contempt of court on 24 May. His “Yves Rocher case” probation was substituted for a prison term in January 2021.
