Russia to suspend electricity import to Finland starting May 14

RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of Russian electricity company Inter RAO, will suspend import of electricity to Finland starting May 14, the website of Fingrid, a Finnish electricity transmission operator, informs.

Fingrid stated that the import was halted due to problems in receiving payments for electricity.

The import of electricity from Russia will be halted at 1 a.m. on May 14. Nevertheless, the company assured Finnish citizens that there will be no electricity shortages, as Russia has covered approximately 10% of Finland’s total consumption.

The company added that the shortage would be compensated by importing more electricity from Sweden.

RAO Nordic Oy confirmed the upcoming suspension of electricity trading with Finland. The company noted that they still had not received the money for electricity imported from Russia since May 6. “This situation is exceptional and happened for the first time in over twenty years of our trading history,” the company said in a statement.
