During his Sunday talks with US President Donald Trump in Florida, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested Washington provide Ukraine with security guarantees for between 30–50 years, Ukrainian news outlet RBC-Ukraine reported on Monday.

According to Zelensky, a 15-year US guarantee, with the option of extension, was currently on the table, an option he described as “strong,” but not yet “permanent.”

“I told [Trump] that the war has already been going on for almost 15 years, and we would really like the guarantees to be longer. I told him that we would really like to consider the possibility of 30, 40, 50 years,”  Zelensky said, adding that it would be “a historic decision by President Trump” and that the president had said “he would think about it”.

Ahead of the talks, Zelensky presented a revised peace plan, reducing an earlier 28-point draft to a 20-point framework. The proposals include three-party security guarantees involving the US, Ukraine and Europe, as well as a bilateral US-Ukraine agreement.

Zelensky said that credible security guarantees could allow for the lifting of martial law and that the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine would deter future Russian aggression. He also said that he was open to a personal meeting with Vladimir Putin, but accused Moscow of attempting to undermine the peace process through its relentless attacks on Ukrainian cities and its maximalist territorial ambitions in the east of the country.
