Ten killed in Russian ballistic missile strike on Ukrainian port city Odesa

Ten people have been killed and at least another 47 injured in a Russian ballistic missile strike on the city of Odesa in southern Ukraine, Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov said on Monday.

Trukhanov said that the missile had struck a residential area, and that the victims had all been local residents “simply going about their business”.

Odesa region Governor Oleh Kiper said that three of the 47 people reported to have been wounded were in a serious condition in the attack, which had caused damage to both civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a parking lot, a university, and an administration building had also suffered damage, and extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

Responding to the second lethal Russian strike on Ukrainian civilians in as many days, Zelensky once again called out Russian aggression. “These are not random strikes … Russia has shown that it is only interested in war.”

On Sunday night, 11 people, including two children, were killed, and another 89 were injured when a Russian missile struck the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine.

That attack came on the day the Biden administration finally lifted its restrictions on Kyiv’s use of US-supplied ATACMS missiles to hit military targets deep inside Russian territory. The New York Times said that initial Ukrainian strikes would likely target Russian and North Korean forces in the Russian Kursk region, which borders the Sumy region.
