Ukrainian drones attacked a Russian naval base in the city of Kaspiysk, in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, for the first time since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to independent news outlet Ukrainska Pravda.

Two Russian navy missile ships were damaged in the attack, as well as several small artillery ships, Ukrainska Pravda wrote, citing sources in the Ukrainian intelligence services.

Dagestan’s head, Sergey Melikov, reported on Wednesday morning that air defence forces had shot down a drone over Kaspiysk, though did not provide details on the outcome of the attack.

Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, posted a video on Telegram showing a drone hitting a naval base and causing a large explosion.

According to media reports, the 177th Marine Regiment, which took part in battles in the partially occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in eastern Ukraine, are stationed at the damaged facility, while the attacked fleet had carried out missile strikes against Ukraine.
