Russian opposition politician Yulia Navalnaya was added to the government list of “terrorists and extremists” by Russia’s financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring on Thursday, according to the government agency’s website.
Earlier this week a Moscow court arrested Navalnaya, who pledged to continue her late husband Alexey Navalny’s work after his death in an Arctic penal colony in February, in absentia for “participation in an extremist community”.
Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation was labelled “a foreign agent” by the Russian government in 2019 and was declared an extremist organisation two years later, making it illegal for Navalny supporters to operate in Russia.
Navalnaya, who currently lives abroad, has not been declared a “foreign agent” yet, a fact that she mocked the Russian authorities for in a post on X on Tuesday. “Oh, so no usual procedure? Foreign agent, criminal case, then arrest?” she wrote.
Navalnaya reminded her followers that “Vladimir Putin is a murderer and a war criminal. His place is in prison, and not somewhere in The Hague, in a cosy cell with a TV, but in Russia — in the same colony and the same 2 by 3 metre cell in which he killed Alexey.”
