Shelling in the town of Shebekino, in the Russian region of Belgorod which borders Ukraine, has caused an apartment building to collapse, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said Friday.
According to preliminary data, three people suffered injuries, Gladkov said, adding that emergency services were working on site.
Up to five people could remain under the rubble of the collapsed building, Telegram channel Shot reported, adding that 15 apartments in the building collapsed after it was struck “in a Ukrainian attack”.
The collapse of an apartment building in the city of Belgorod on 12 May resulted in 17 deaths, with the Russian Defence Ministry stating the building had been struck by shrapnel from a downed Ukrainian Tochka U missile.
The region is regularly struck by glide bombs fired from Russian aircraft. Russian independent media outlet Vot Tak estimated in May that up to 60 Russian bombs may have been dropped accidentally on the Belgorod region over the past year. This could be due to Russian jets launching glide bombs from the Belgorod region to avoid flying over Ukrainian territory, meaning some fail to reach their target, Belgorod-focused media outlet Pepel suggested.
