Chechnya’s Kadyrov mosque outside Jerusalem damaged in missile attack
A missile has struck the village of Abu Gosh outside Jerusalem, damaging a mosque funded by the Chechen government as Hamas continued to attack targets across Israel, the Israeli Foreign Ministry reported on Monday.
Abu Gosh is inhabited primarily by Arab Israelis. Ramzan Kadyrov, head of Chechnya, a Muslim republic in southern Russia, opened a mosque in the village in 2014 that he dedicated to his father and the first head of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov.
The present day residents of Abu Gosh are descendants of Chechens who moved from the North Caucasus to the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, according to researchers.
The Abu Gosh administration said that around €9.5 million was spent on the mosque’s construction, €5.7 million of which was donated by the Chechen government.
