Odesa region comes under drone and missile attack

A nationwide air raid alert has been issued in Ukraine after the country’s air force reported a Shahed kamikaze drone strike on the southwestern Odesa region in the early hours of Monday morning.

Oleh Kiper, the Odesa governor, said that Russia had attacked the region with combat drones and missiles. A woman was hospitalised after being injured by falling debris from a missile.

Seaport infrastructure in Odesa had been damaged, Kiper said, as were several non-residential buildings in the city.

The Odesa territorial defence forces reported later on Monday that Russia had launched 19 combat drones and two supersonic missiles that destroyed an abandoned seaport hotel and numerous grain warehouses.

Ukrainian media also reported explosions in the central Ukrainian city Kryvyi Rih on Monday where drone debris damaged an industrial facility and started a fire, according to Serhiy Lysak, the local governor.

Roman Mrochko, the head of the military administration in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, said that Russia had dropped two guided aerial bombs on Kherson and two more on the nearby town of Antonivka.

Two Kalibr missiles were also downed over Ukraine’s Mykolaiv and Kropyvnytskyi regions early on Monday.

The regional governor of Russia’s southern Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, reported on Monday that the local air defences had intercepted two fixed-wing Ukrainian drones overnight.

Russia’s air defences also repelled a drone attack in Russia’s central Tula region, the local regional security ministry reported on Monday. No injuries or damage was reported, the ministry said.

Russia’s Defence Ministry also reported downing four drones overnight in the northwestern Black Sea and over annexed Crimea.

Incoming air threat protocols were activated early on Monday at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, Telegram channels Baza and Shot reported. A total of 14 flights were delayed and six were cancelled.

Memorial to Polish and Lithuanian political deportees removed in Yakutia

A memorial to Polish and Lithuanian political deportees has been removed from the city of Yakutsk in Russia’s Far Eastern Yakutia region, local news outlet SakhaDay reported on Monday.

All the stone slabs that made up the memorial were removed and taken to an unknown location.

The memorial was erected in 2002 to commemorate the “Polish victims of deportations of and mass oppression”. These include participants of the 1863 January Uprising in Poland, a riot that sought to restore Poland’s independence from the Russian Empire but ultimately failed and resulted in numerous Polish intellectuals being deported to Siberia, as well as the victims of the Stalinist repressions of the 1930s.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between Moscow and its two NATO-member neighbours who have both been fierce critics of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. A similar memorial was destroyed in Russia’s Perm region in April.
