Ukrainian counterintelligence reportedly behind overnight drone strike on Russia’s military airfield in Kursk

The Ukrainian Security Service’s counterintelligence department masterminded an attack on an airfield located in Kursk, a city in Western Russia located near the Ukrainian border, RBC-Ukraine reported on Sunday, citing sources in the security service.

The news outlet was told that “16 kamikaze drones targeted four Su-30 and one MiG-29 planes”. “S-300 missile system radars and two Pantzir missile systems are among the hit targets,” RBC-Ukraine added.

Reportedly, almost all drones reached their targets, while only three were downed by Russian air defences. The precise number of destroyed jets and killed personnel is being clarified.

Kursk region Governor Roman Starovoyt said earlier today that a drone crashed into an apartment block in the city at night. Starovoyt added that no one was injured.

The Russian Defence Ministry also reported in the early hours of 27 August that two drones had been downed over the Kursk and Bryansk regions.

On 26 August, Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that the region had been shelled with cluster munitions. Six people were injured in the attack.
