The General Security Directorate of Lebanon has detained a Russian national and his wife, as TASS was told by the Russian embassy in the country.
Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar reports that the two were detained while trying to leave the country via the Beirut International Airport.
“The Russian national confessed to working for Israeli intelligence; he was tasked to arrive in Lebanon. He was provided maps of Hezbollah-owned facilities; his mission was to visit those locations and take photos of them,” the newspaper says.
The man’s wife is reported to have revealed that she was aware of her husband’s mission, and she also assisted him. Their trips within the country were tracked by the Lebanese security agencies.
Russia’s embassy in Lebanon has reported that the matter is being discussed with the local authorities. The diplomats are awaiting permission to visit the Russian nationals.
