Ukraine forces land in west Crimea and hoist Ukrainian flag, military intel claims

Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) has claimed that its units landed on Cape Tarkhankut in the western part of Crimea in the early hours of Thursday and unfurled a Ukrainian flag there.

The operation was carried out with the support of the Ukrainian Navy. HUR alleged that the troops then left the area unscathed.

“During the operation, the defenders of Ukraine entered into combat with the occupiers’ units. The enemy suffered losses among personnel and military equipment. Moreover, the national flag has flown over Ukrainian Crimea once again,” HUR’s statement reads.

A video published on the intelligence directorate’s Telegram channel shows men in military uniform hanging a Ukrainian flag on a small building at night time.

Russia has not yet commented on the incident.

Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence, earlier told the Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske that there had been a fight between Ukrainian and Russian soldiers involving the use of sea- and aircraft.

Residents of Cape Tarkhankut told the media that they had heard gunfire and explosions in the early hours of Thursday.

On Wednesday, HUR reported destroying a Russian S-400 missile system on Cape Tarkhankut, including its missile supply and crew.
