Ukraine preparing for peace summit in Saudi Arabia, Zelensky’s office confirms

Ukraine is getting ready to participate in the peace summit which is expected to take place in Saudi Arabia in early August, head of the Ukrainian President’s office, Andriy Yermak, said on Saturday.

“We are preparing the next meeting of state leader advisors on the implementation of the peace formula of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which will be held soon in Saudi Arabia,” Yermak said.

He added that a peace treaty would have to include ten fundamental points of the “peace formula” developed by Ukraine. Kyiv is discussing its formula with over 50 countries on “almost a daily basis”, Yermak claimed.

He also outlined a three-stage strategy to build up to the peace treaty. The first and second phases involve meetings with diplomats and national security advisers respectively, while the final stage would be a global inaugural summit of state leaders, which could take place before the end of the year.

Earlier, the WSJ quoted diplomats as saying that Saudi Arabia intended to host peace talks between Western countries, Ukraine, and key developing countries on 5-6 August.

WSJ sources said that representatives of 30 countries and organisations, including Brazil, the UK, Egypt, the EU, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, Chile, South Africa, Zambia, and Egypt are expected to attend the summit. Russia will not be present, WSJ wrote.

In late June, Denmark hosted a peace meeting organised by Ukraine. In addition to several Western states, it was also attended by diplomats from the Global South, including China, India, Brazil and South Africa. The meeting was held in preparation for the upcoming peace summit, which will aim to develop a roadmap for an internationally mediated settlement of the Ukraine war.
