Viktar Babaryka, an opposition politician who ran for President of Belarus in 2020 and is now in prison for alleged major bribery, has been admitted to a hospital in Navapolatsk, his Telegram channel says.
“Friends. Yesterday there were rumours that Viktar Babaryka was in the hospital in Navapolatsk. We have managed to confirm this information. Unfortunately, further details are not yet known,” the message said.
Rumours of Babaryka’s condition emerged yesterday. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, another major opposition figure in Belarus, wrote that Babaryka “was admitted to hospital after having been evidently beaten up”. She demanded that Babaryka’s family and lawyers be allowed to visit him, and that his condition be “publicly demonstrated”.
