Moscow’s Sovremennik theatre has cancelled The Gin Game show involving actress Liya Akhedzhakova in the title role, as she told Novaya Gazeta.
Akhedzhakova said that the theatre’s director Yuri Kravets called her and said that he was forced to cancel the show because of piles of angry letters addressed to the actress, Novaya says.
Kravets’s secretary also confirmed the show had been cancelled. As she was asked when it is scheduled, she replied: “It is not.”
“The reason for this decision, according to the theatre, is allegedly the artist’s poor health. Which is not true,” reports Novaya Gazeta.
Liya Akhedzhakova is known for her anti-war stance. She noted that she really wanted to play in this performance. After each performance, she received support from the audience and got flowers, and people also thanked her for her public stance.
In December, another show starring Akhedzhakova was postponed in Saint Petersburg due to “repairs at the theatre”, Akhedzhakova told Novaya Gazeta Europe. The same show was cancelled in Moscow earlier for reasons unknown to Akhedzhakova.
