The Lefortovo District Court of Moscow has sentenced ex-soldier of the French Foreign Legion Maxim Dmitrienko to four years of imprisonment over charges of an attempt to go fight on Ukraine’s side in the war, Russia’s state news agency TASS reports.
The court found Dmitrienko guilty of an attempt to take part in an armed formation on the territory of a foreign nation for purposes contrary to Russia’s interests.
Dmitrienko will spend the first two years of his sentence in a prison and the next two in a strict regime colony.
The French Foreign Legion is part of France’s ground forces and is made up primarily of foreigners.
