Artyom Uss, son of Russian governor accused of money laundering and bypassing sanctions, released on house arrest in Italy

A court in Milan has released Artyom Uss, a son of Alexander Uss, the governor of Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region, from jail on a house arrest condition, says Prealpina. The younger Uss is accused of money laundering and bypassing sanctions in the US. The decision was made on 25 November.

Uss will be obliged to wear an electronic tag until the consideration of his case regarding his extradition to the US is complete. It is unknown when this is going to happen. The Prosecutor General of Milan has already filed an indictment requesting that the man be handed over to the United States.

Artyom Uss was arrested in Italy on 19 October at the request of the United States. The US Department of Justice considers five Russians, including Uss, guilty of smuggling oil, exporting military technology from the United States and money laundering.

The Russians, according to the US Department of Justice, took part in schemes for the sale of oil from Venezuela using shell companies and cryptocurrencies. The department also believes that they purchased dual-use electronics and military technology from the West, which is prohibited by sanctions.

Uss refused to be extradited to the US and pleaded not guilty. In court, he stated that he had never been to New York, and the last time he visited the US was 25 years ago when he was only 14.

Uss is also wanted in Russia. A court in Moscow issued an arrest warrant for him for money laundering in an especially large amount. He is facing up to 7 years in prison and a 1 million rubles [€15,800] fine.
