Russia adds 11 British overseas territories to its list of ‘unfriendly countries’

Russia has added 11 British overseas territories to its list of ‘unfriendly countries’ for supporting anti-Russian sanctions, as per the government’s website.

The territories in question are Bermuda, the British Antarctic Territory, the British Indian Ocean Territory, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Montserrat, the Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It is noted in the statement that only three of the 14 British Overseas Territories were considered “unfriendly” before, namely Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and Gibraltar. The official document has yet to be published.

Russia’s government adopted the list of countries which “commit unfriendly actions towards Russia” in early March. The initial list had 48 countries on it, including all EU countries, Australia, the UK, Canada, South Korea, Norway, Ukraine and others.

The Bailiwicks of Guernsey and the Isle of Man were added in late July for “supporting the UK sanctions.” The Bahamas was another country added to the list for “introducing a ban on any transactions with the Bank of Russia, the Russian Ministry of Finance and a number of credit institutions of the Russian Federation.”
