“Don’t believe what they say about us on the Internet!” a shop assistant at the local grocery store tells me. She is standing on a footstool, laying out cans of meat in a pleasing arrangement. “First of all, we don’t know where these fairy tales even came from. Secondly, the people they’re talking about don’t have a single draft paper on them.”
“Everyone picks cranberries here,” the second woman nods below. “It’s October, people are earning money.”
A young couple, a guy and a girl who just bought themselves two energy drinks, join our conversation.
“It’s cranberry season, and the swamps are big here,” the young man nods. “I haven’t heard anything of this kind. But I didn’t get a draft paper either. And if I do get one, I’m not going to hide, I’ll go!”
