Moscow’s Basmanny District Court has fined journalist Karen Shainian 10 thousand rubles (close to $165) for not marking himself a “foreign agent,” reported Pavel Chikov, head of the Agora human rights group.
On 15 April 2022, the Ministry of Justice included Shainyan, a prominent blogger and video journalist, in its register of “foreign agent” media outlets. Since then, he has refrained from adding the label to his videos on YouTube or posts on other social networks.
On 19 August, a court fined political scientist Ekaterina Schulmann 10 thousand rubles for committing the same offence — not marking her videos as ones created by a “foreign agent”.
A judge in the Meshchansky Court, which issued Schulmann the penalty, first returned the protocol to Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor due to drafting errors. The agency sent the protocol back to the court without correcting it, and another judge accepted it.
