UN: 5,237 civilians killed in Ukraine since war started

From 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation’s armed attack against Ukraine started, to 24 July 2022, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 12,272 civilian casualties in the country: 5,237 killed and 7,035 injured.

A total of 2,019 men, 1,379 women, 143 girls, and 164 boys were killed, as well as 41 children and 1,491 adults whose sex is yet unknown. March was the deadliest month, with 3120 people dead. A total of 285 people were killed in July. 6,849 casualties were recorded in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, more than elsewhere. 241 people were killed and 940 were injured on the territory controlled by Russian armed forces and affiliated armed groups.

2,148 civilians were killed and 3,275 were injured in other regions of Ukraine. Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, including shelling from heavy artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes.

OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher “due to the fact that the reception of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration
